the power of psychotherapy

As one part of an integrative treatment approach, psychotherapy is a potent agent for change for many people (myself included) adding exponential value to one’s overall healing and personal growth. Based on my experiences as both patient and therapist, some ways psychotherapy and the relationship between the patient and therapist can uniquely support your well-being include:

Increasing your “emotional fluency” so you can put words to your deepest experiences as well as communicate more effectively with others.

Increasing your window of tolerance for distressing sensations, emotions, and cognitions so you can truly feel it to heal it

Illuminating subconscious and automatic patterns in your behaviors in order to understand yourself more deeply and create space between the situation/stimulus and your reaction to it.

Awareness yields change.

Healing attachment trauma through the repeated experience of being seen and heard by a “safe-enough” other.

By helping you feel a little bit less alone. Sometimes that is everything.

“The principle aim of psychotherapy is not to transport one to an impossible state of happiness, but to help (the client) acquire steadfastness and patience in the face
of suffering.”
Carl Jung

Psychotherapy

Think of psychotherapy as just one tool in your healing toolbox. It is a part of your treatment-- not the entirety of it. Depending on where you are in your journey, you may be seeking to confront long-suppressed emotions or trauma, understand why you keep repeating the same harmful behaviors, or explore patterns in your relationships and career. This is where psychotherapy comes in. It allows for the kind of deep self-exploration and relational safety critical to your self-evolution, particularly in the psychological and spiritual domains.

Typically, psychotherapy involves weekly or biweekly sessions and incorporates many therapeutic modalities including mindfulness, somatic awareness and regulation, attachment-based models, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and trauma-specific interventions such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Internal Family Systems (IFS) models. The relationship between the therapist and patient, in my experience, is directly correlated with the therapy outcome. Thus, I emphasize establishing and maintaining safety and trust above all else when working with a patient in psychotherapy.

So whether you are just starting out on your healing journey where you are looking to enhance your process and gain insight, or are further along your path and ready to add another tool to your toolbox, psychotherapy is always a worthy investment. And you are worthy of psychotherapy.

Diagnostic Consultation

Ansel Psychology, PLLC also offers one-time diagnostic consultations for individuals needing professional documentation of a psychiatric diagnosis. During this type of appointment, I will review the comprehensive background paperwork completed by the patient and all available medical records. A complete biopsychosocial interview will also be completed. At the end of the appointment, I will provide feedback on my clinical and diagnostic impressions along with recommendations for treatment, if applicable.
